These works were started in 1649 by Sir Hugh Cholmley. In 1673 a licence was granted to build a harbour at Saltwick. Before this a quay at Whitby had been used to ship things in and out. The works finally closed in 1791.
Today you can see the remains of the quarry on the headland, including a large area of calcined (burnt) shale. This is the dark red colour on the cliffs in the image above.
You can also see the remains of a quay or harbour wall and building stones (photo above) on the beach at Saltwick. The sand here is also very red and much of it is made up from ground up, burnt alum shale.
