Tees Valley Wildlife Trust River Tees Project
The River Tees Rediscovered Landscape Partnership covers an area of 140km2 within the Tees Valley, focusing on the river corridor from the coast at Teesmouth to Piercebridge just outside Darlington. A stage two application for Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) support was successful in June 2014, unlocking £1.9m HLF funding with the total funding package including partner contributions standing at £3.7m for the 5 year landscape Partnership.
The Tees Valley Wildlife Trust project focuses on the our five reserves along the River Tees; Preston Farm, Bowesfield, Portrack Marsh, Maze Park and Coatham Marsh.
The main aim of the project is to carry out a series of improvements to benefit natural heritage and community use of these sites. This will provide a means of engaging the community in learning about natural heritage as well as making habitat and access improvements relevant to the Tees Lowlands natural areas.

Some of our work so far;
Habitat Creation – Bowesfield Nesting Beach
Habitat Improvement – Maze Park Butterfly Area
Improving Access – Portrack Marsh
Community Engagement – Coatham Marsh Butterfly Count
For the start of the project we’re focusing on improving access and interpretation on our reserves. This will hopefully have a positive impact on visitor numbers.
We’re always after volunteers for practical and educational work, so if you live close to the Tees or like to walk around our River Tees reserves, then please get in touch!
