Jacky Watson, our Wilder Coast Officer, has been working to recruit a cohort of Ambassadogs. Ambassadogs and owners join up to show they care about our wading birds and want to help us protect them. Ambassadogs give wading birds plenty of space on the beach. It’s crucial for wading birds to be able to rest and feed undisturbed. After lockdown, keep your eyes peeled for the blue Ambassadogs neckerchief. Ambassadog owners can tell you all about the project’s aims to keep wading birds safe and undisturbed. (Remember, follow current COVID guidelines – HANDS, FACE, SPACE).
Special Protection Area
Did you know that the Teesmouth and Cleveland coast is a Special Protection Area? It received the designation because it supports internationally important populations of migrating species and water birds. You can expect to see some of these birds when you are out on the seafront. Curlew, dunlin, knot, oystercatcher, purple sandpiper, redshank, ringed plover, sanderling, and turnstone are just some of our important coastal birds. There’s so much to see at the beach and we want to keep it that way!
It’s critically important to protect these birds because over 90% of intertidal habitats have been lost to land reclamation. The remaining areas are subject to high levels of human disturbance.
The Wilder Coast Project aims to increase public appreciation of our coastal birds, improve habitat and reduce disturbance. Ambassadogs is part of this effort and we encourage everyone who loves their beach (and their dogs) to get involved.
