Feeding garden birds is a great way for people, especially those who are unable to get outdoors, to get a daily dose of nature. This is why we are piloting a Bird Buddies scheme in Brotton. This winter is especially challenging for our wellbeing, and feeding the birds is a small achievable caring action that enables people to feel more positive.
With funding from the Tees Valley Nature Partnership, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and Beyond housing the Tees Valley Wildlife Trust is enrolling fifty households to become Brotton Bird Buddies. Participants have received a bird feeding station, a colourful garden bird identification guide and supplies of bird seed and nuts. Through the winter they will receive monthly goody bags of indoor activities designed to stimulate creativity and foster learning about garden birds. In addition. Regular phone calls and hand written bird themed postcards from trained Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers will allow participants to share their experiences and feel less isolated.
